Review of Cork Jet Pump Style Corkscrew

Hands down, this is the worst product I've ever purchased. The only thing it manages to do properly is put a hole in the cork.If this is all you want, then you're in luck.If you want the cork to actually *come out of the bottle*, go buy something else.

Now that I've been to other web sites and read reviews, I see that there are really mixed reviews on this particular product (I bought it when there were no reviews to be had).Apparently they must have a real quality issue with either design or manufacturing. In the end: If you buy this item, you might get a working one, or you might not.How lucky are you feeling today?

Product Description
Uncork easily without twisting or tugging. Just insert the needle, push the button, and watch the cork pop out instantly without any effort. The Cork Jet works on all types of bottles, even flange-tops. Includes a free foil cutter and one replaceable cartridge for uncorking up to 80 bottles of wine. Plus if the cork happens to get stuck over the needle just a simple counter clockwise twist of the lower silver compartment will remove the cork. This corkscrew is not mean for use with synthetic corks

Review of Fox Run Argyle Cork Retriever, Black/Chrome

I would have given this particular item a "0", had there been that number of stars available ! It came without one piece, but most importantly to you all is that it doesn't work as described. Following the "instructions" caused me nothing but grief, and I think I can read and interpret things pretty well. When attempting to pull the cork out of the bottle, the plastic gripping bands kept sliding off, and just caused the cork to be repeatedly jammed into the neck of the bottle. The gripping surface just isn't sufficient to get a good enough hold of the cork to pull it all the way out. However, it does one thing during the process very well..................i.e., it causes the user to significantly increase their personal angst and stress levels to astronomic proportions. Save yourself all this by NOT buying this item. Save your time and money by getting one of the many other "cork retrievers" out there on the market, OR merely use a good old fashion wire coat hanger with one end bent at a small right angle to shove down the bottle and "fish & hook" the cork back up through the bottle's neck portion......

Product Description
The Argyle Cork Retreiver works first, everytime. It retreives corks that slip leaving no cork residue in the bottle.

Review of Waring Pro PC200 Double Wine Chiller with Metrokane Houdini Lever-Style Corkscrew Wine Tool Stand

Does exactly what it says it does, and does it pretty quickly. And wine served at the proper temperature is simply amazing - "room temperature" is almost always too warm, and wine from the refrigerator is ALWAYS too cold, even chards and sauvignon blancs. And since my wife likes red and I like whites, being able to do two bottles is great (and we usually wind up putting a second red in after the white is gone when we have company).

My only gripe is that the fans are too noisy to use this in an open area. We've stuck ours in the pantry closet, and there the noise doesn't disturb. Don't get me wrong, it's not like a jet engine or anything, just a little too loud to be on public display while it's working.

Product Description
Professionally engineered and elegantly designed, this tabletop wine chiller makes it easy to serve wine at proper temperatures. Two independent libraries come preprogrammed with expert-recommended temperatures for 33 varieties of red, white, and champagne wines. The separate chambers cool and keep each bottle at the selected temperature. Wine lovers can enjoy Chardonnay with a delicate scallop appetizer, followed by Chianti with a pasta entree--each at its perfect serving temperature. The unit's thermo-electric Peltier module with CPU control provides constant temperature, while its blue LCD backlit display ensures easy reading. Suitable for wine bottles with diameter up to 3-1/2 inches, the wine chiller measures 10-1/2 by 7-1/2 by 10-3/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty with a five-year limited warranty on the motor. Also included is the Metrokane Houdini Lever-Style Corkscrew Wine Tool Stand

Review of Alessi Anna G. Corkscrew

I first saw the Anna G. corkscrew on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and was really impressed. When I ordered my own, I loved the looks of the matt black finish against the gleaming chrome.I found that the piece worked well at extracting corks from my wine bottles, but that is where the recommendation ends.Once the cork is on the screw, it is stuck and is extremely difficult to remove.Every time that I have used it, I have needed to go to my garage and get a pair of strong pliers to twist the cork off of the screw. The extreme difficulty of use has made Anna G. an interesting and artistic addition to my kitchen, however it is no longer used for opening wine bottles. My old, $2 corkscrew does an infitiely better job.

Review of Screwpull Metal Wine Pump & 3 Stoppers

I'm a single woman so it often takes me a long time to finish off a bottle of wine.Because of this I found myself hesitant to open any nice bottles for fear that I wouldn't be able to finish them before they went bad. This gadget has been the perfect solution for me.The stoppers have fit perfectly in all the bottles I have tried thus far and do a great job of improving wine longevity. They add a good couple (and sometimes I can push the bottle further) days of freshness to my wine and give it more longevity than the stoppers I have tried that do not use a pump. The pump is also very easy to use.It doesn't require a lot of strength and it is clear from giving the stopper a gentle tug that the seal is holding. The simplicity and speed of use is what makes this gadget invaluable because it means that I use it every time I open a bottle of wine.Having limited kitchen space I also appreciate how small this gadget is because I can slip it right into my cutlery drawer and have it on hand when I need it.
Overall this gadget is a bit pricey but if you find it takes you time to get through a bottle of wine it is well worth the money in that you will waste far less wine.Highly recommended.

Review of Lever Man corkscrew (stainless steel) (5.85"H x 1.5"W x 6.25"D)

After reading less than stellar reviews on Amazon about the Metrokane Rabbit line of corkscrews I started searching for some other options and happened to see this one by Blomus in a wine shop in Las Vegas.

Purchased as soon as I saw it go on sale directly through the vendor (Unbeatable Sale not Amazon) and after one use I can say I'm VERY happy with this product. It has a sturdy structure, feels solid in the hand and is made of high quality materials which should last a long time.Bonus inclusion was replacement corkscrew that I doubt I'll have to use for sometime and foil cutter which makes removing the foil a clean quick job.

This corkscrew removes the cork in the same way the Metrokanes' do so if you like that style corkscrew but want something sturday that will LAST then consider Blomus. They're a German company and live of up to the reputation of good German engineering once again with this product.

Review of Screwpull Table Model Opener

Screwpull Table Model OpenerI don't normally write reviews, but I was surprised to see that this item only had a one-star review (based on a single reviewer with arthritis). While it may not work if you have arthritis, many wine lovers consider this the best corkscrew available.I know people that own multiple ScrewPulls and give them as gifts.I am just about to buy my 4th ScrewPull. It's much easier to use than most other cork screws (unless, apparently, you have arthritis) because you use the same simple motion to "start" the corkscrew as you do to pull out the cork....you just keep turning the handle.Very simple!

Product Description
Just as there's nothing better than a bottle of wine at the beach, cabin, or campground; there's nothing worse than being stuck without a corkscrew. The table corkscrew from Screwpull is not only compact and lightweight; it's a sophisticated tool friends will covet. Not only does this clever corkscrew take the work out of cork removal for effortless bottle opening, it now automatically twists the cork off the screw as well. To open, simply pull the handle and the durable Teflon screw drives precisely into the cork's center. Push lightly the other way and the cork climbs effortlessly out of the bottle. Then, while holding the corkscrew panels (and not the cork); pull the handle again and--voila, the device pushes the cork off the screw unscathed! Pinch down on the sides to keep the cork from falling off, and reinsert it with the same ease. Finally, fold up the corkscrew and pack it away.

Review of WMF Clever and More corkscrew, foil cutter, opener.

If I shot this thing with a rocket it would be completely undamaged. It could probably withstand an atomic blast, too. This thing is very solid and has a nice, somewhat heavy feel to it.Not only that, but it looks beautiful from every angle. When opening any of the three tools, you must use alot of force... especially the knife, which, in order to be pried open, requires the strength of 10 men.Oh and speaking of the knife... it's more like a saw.The serrated edges on it are like the teeth of a shark (unlike other wine openers!)

The best wine-opener / waiter's tool.....EVER!!!!!!!!!

Review of VacuVin wine saver, wine server and corkscrew set.

The corkscrew is good, especially for people with diminished hand strength. The other tools are useful too, but it's the vacuum pump that really makes a difference.

Looking at the reviews of this an other Vacuvin products, you see reports that are deeply contradictory. It's interesting that there is such a divergence of experience with such a simple product. The ideas behind Vacuvin are pretty simple.
First, air is the enemy of an open bottle of wine. Bacteria in the air want to turn alcohol into vinegar. The air itself oxidizes and dulls the taste of all but the most robust wines.
Second, you can remove some of the air with a simple pump and thereby slow down the rate at which wine deteriorates.

Why then, do we have both no-star and five-star reactions to this product?
Maybe the biggest source of disagreement is expectations. Vacuvin slows the deterioration of wine in the bottle, but it doesn't stop it.

Another possible reason for all the disagreement might be a question of temperature. The biochemical reactions that kill your wine are temperature sensitive. They proceed faster when the wine is warm and slow down when it's cool. Putting a pumped-out bottle in the refrigerator or wine cooler will slow down the spoilage processes and make Vacuvin more effective.
A third issue is the way the wine is handled before the Vacuvin plug goes in. If wine has a lot of air dissolved in it by being poured from decanter to bottle, there's no system that will keep it fresh.

For more info on wine storage, check out my book, New Short Course in Wine,The

--Lynn Hoffman, author of New Short Course in Wine,The and bang BANG: A Novel from Kunati Books.

Product Description
VacuVin wine saver, wine server and corkscrew set. Includes pump, two stoppers one wine server and one wine corkscrew. The Wine Saver is a vacuum pump, which extracts the air from the opened bottle and re-seals it with a re-usable rubber stopper. Place the re-usable stopper in the bottle and extract the air from the bottle using the Wine Saver pump. A click sound tells you when you have reached the optimum vacuum level. The vacuum slows down the oxidation process so that you can enjoy your wine for longer. The question how often do I have to pump? is a thing of the past. The unique and patented vacuum indicator will emit a click sound when the correct vacuum is reached. The included elegant Wine Server Crystal allows perfect, non-drip pouring every time. The pouring surface is designed to prevent dripping and return any excess wine back into the bottle. The high gloss transparent material gives this Wine Server a crystal appearance. The special design of the Wine Server ensures a perfect fit on most wine bottles.

Review of Metrokane VIP Edition Leather-Bound Rabbit Corkscrew, Saddle Brown

From a design standpoint, this is a very good product. But the documentation is pathetic, and was clearly never tested with new / real users. There is no explanation of how it's supposed to work. That understanding is very helpful:with it, you'll never have trouble, and will marvel at the clever design.Let's get started.

Have a bottle of wine handy on which you've already used the supplied (and very good) little foil cutter to remove the foil over the cork.

Take the unit in your hand and look at the movable parts. The overhead lever that swings outward / downward and then is reversed / brought back over the top - moves the spiral corkscrew up and down.To see this, operate the overhead lever with one hand while holding the clamping "side handles" with the other. When you move the overhead handle the corkscrew rotates.

Why is the corkscrew turning?Because it's forced to do that as it goes through a "guide" (the metal collar with gray plastic center). The gray plastic piece has an internal spiral track that forces the corkscrew to rotate as it passes through.

Here's the critical point:as long as the guide mechanism is locked in place and can't move up or down, the guide forces the corkscrew to rotate when going through.

What if this guide were locked in place on the `down-stroke,' but could move vertically on the `up-stroke'?Then the guide would force the corkscrew to rotate on the way down (so the corkscrew would penetrate the cork), but the guide would stay attached to (and _not_ rotate) the corkscrew on the way up - thus pulling the cork.

When the unit is operated correctly this is exactly what happens. But how?

Look more closely:Before using the Rabbit's `side-handles' to hold the wine bottle neck, the guide is locked in place by two protruding spring-loaded latches and can't move vertically.Try it:it won't budge.(You can actually see these small latches projecting over the top of the guide and keeping it from moving - by looking in the area above and to the far rear of the guide, near the smooth rod.)

On the other hand, when the clamping handles are squeezed onto the neck of a bottle, these latches above the guide _retract_, releasing their hold on the guide so it can move upward.

Do this now:Take your bottle of wine and, with the overhead lever rotated to its fully outward / downward position, place the guide directly over the cork and grip the neck of the bottle _firmly_ with the clamping side handles.

Look at the latches described above:they have retracted, and no longer restrain the guide from moving upward. This has no effect during the down-stroke / cork penetration phase, since the guide is already as low as it can go.Because the guide can't move, it forces the corkscrew to rotate when you operate the overhead lever - thus penetrating the cork.Perform this down-stroke.

Now watch what happens when the overhead lever is pulled back to withdraw the cork (while you at the same time continue to grip the bottle neck firmly with the side levers).Because the guide can now move vertically with the corkscrew, it imposes no rotation on the corkscrew. The corkscrew stays inside the cork as the overhead lever is moved outward / downward, and the cork is extracted.Do it.You now have the cork out of the bottle, suspended above the bottle neck, and are still gripping the side handles around the bottle neck.

Release your hold on the side handles and move the Rabbit away from the bottle. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew.Re-grip the side handles with one hand and once again operate the overhead lever, bringing it all the way back to its fully closed position again (as if you were on the original down-stroke into the cork).

As you get to the very end of the stroke, you will feel resistance and will hear a click:the latches have snapped back into place over the top of the guide, locking it in place. The guide is once again `captured' - and cannot move vertically. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew.

Finally, move the overhead lever back yet again to its fully open position (as if pulling the cork from the bottle). This time the latches _don't_ retract (because you're not using the side handles to grip the bottle neck) - so the latches again keep the guide from moving, and this forces the corkscrew to rotate `in reverse' as it passes upward through the guide. The corkscrew backs out of the cork and the cork drops off.It takes all of a few seconds once you get the hang of it.

Understanding the operating principles should help.None of this is well explained (or, indeed, explained at all) in the almost non-existent documentation.

Steve Ferris

Review of Metrokane Velvet Corkscrew

I drink about 150 bottles of wine per year. I've been using "screwpull" style corkscrews like this one since the 1980's.They are simple and easy to use.

I paid more than I should have for this one, then the dern thing went and broke after only 50 bottles or so!What's up with that? The metal screw separated from the plastic handle.

Now I'm using the Screwpull Classic Table Corkscrew and Foil Cutter Gift Set, Black.Cheaper, and after 150 bottles or so it works like it should with no signs of cracking or breaking.

Review of Arcosteel 1764 Corkscrew Pro, Wall Mount

This thing looks very impressive and is built pretty well (except that mine has a small crack in the wood handle). However, it ain't that easy to use.As a matter of fact it takes a bit of practice to get used to.The first few bottles I did ended up shooting red wine all over my pantry.Actually ended up having to do some repainting. The secret is in the handle.Make sure you lift it all the way up, go all the way done, and all the way up again. You have to do this to make sure the threads of the screw attached to the pigtail engage.Otherwise, the thing will not twist enough.Just watch the mechanism through the slits on the side...It is also a bit difficult to hold the bottle in place while you are working the handle.I use it pretty often so have gotten used to it but, there are other simpler and just as effective tools (e.g. fork puller thingamajig) but none as impressive and gaudy looking as this monster...

Review of Sharper Image Deluxe Metal Corkscrew Set (PI500)

Don't buy this!It worked for a few weeks but it was extremely hard to force the lever up and over--I had to have one person hold the grips closed while I worked the lever. The corkscrew has now completely stopped working and just pushes the cork farther down into the bottle--so that wine splashes up and the cork is simply submerged in the wine. The corkscrew's gears are also greased in a weird way, so that when you change the worm screw (the product comes with a replacement screw), your hands wind up all greasy.

Just a standard corkscrew, but I prefer the wheel type foil cutter to the little knife style. Might take a little practise, but once mastered you won't go back. Nice clean foil cut as long as the foil isn't too thick. Comfort grip is nice too.

Review of Professional Lever Tabletop Corkscrew with Extras

Average but great for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I would highly recommend this one over cheaper brands, however I was more in the market for a professional model and will soon buy one to replace this one. This one is good for someone just getting into wine as it is removable from the stand and has good pull. If you open lots of bottles of wine it is worth your time to invest in a really good one, my opinion being Screwpull brand as it has the furthest extension on the market (translates to smoothest pull).

Review of Wüsthof Waiter's Corkscrew

I like the ritual and control of opening a bottle with these "waiter's helper" style corkscrews, rather than the quick, impersonal (and expensive) Screwpulls.Unfortunately, the first 3 inexpensive models I purchased (including the Oxo) broke or wore out, so I decided to spend a little more. The Laguiole seemed too expensive, so I tried the Wusthof.

The Wusthof feels solid and smooth in the hand. The components hinge out with the pleasant, firm resistance you expect from German engineering, and they don't flop around as you turn the unit.Unfortunately, the foil cutter is a serrated blade (something that I didn't see on the Amazon description) and it rips the foil rather than cutting it.I like to cut the foil beneath the lip of the bottle, and the Wusthof leaves a ragged, messy, and very visible cut, so I've been using another knife to cut the foil until I find the time to grind the teeth off what appears to be a good quality Wusthof blade.

The corkscrew itself is sharp and well designed, long enough to penetrate the deepest corks, and can be screwed easily down the middle of the cork. The handle provides the right feel and control to guide the cork. The lever rests securely on the bottle and stays clear of the cork (unlike cheaper models, where the lever's claws dig into the cork as it is being extracted), and, combined with the Wusthof's main handle, provides the right leverage even for the most recalcitrant cork, as demonstrated a few days ago, when our evening meal opened with an audible and satisfying pop as I painlessly extracted a long, tightly wedged and slightly dry cork from a Bordeaux bottle with the help of the Wusthof.

In summary, apart from the serrated blade, an excellent choice, well worth the price.

Review of CIA Masters Collection Waiter's Corkscrew

I wait tables at a high end establishment where we sell lots of wine.I typically use a pulltaps wine key because they are offered for free alot from our wine distributers but I thought I'd try something new.The CIA 2 stepped waiter wine key looks great and with the thumb toggle on the blade I thought it would be cool because I could open the blade with one hand while holdind the bottle with the other.Long story short, this wine key didn't last three days.First of all, the blade was so tight that out of everyone in my resaurant I was the only one capable of opening it with my thumb (but it hurt). And the thumb screw fell out after 2 and a half days rendering the corkscrew pretty much unusable.I will send it back if I can.

Review of Oxo SteeL Waiter's Corkscrew

Do not buy this corkscrew. I've had a lot of good corkscrews, mediocre corkscrews, and cheap corkscrews, and this one frustrated me so much I just had to warn people off. I trust OXO enough with their kitchen products that when I needed an opener in a pinch, I thought I couldn't go wrong with this brand...but I was wrong. So here are some of the things I don't like about it:

* It is cheaply made. It looks sturdy because of the stainless steel and trademark black rubber, but the main body is flimsy plastic and the worm has way too much give. I can't imagine it would hold up against some of those stubborn corks.

* It doesn't feel good in the hand. I know this seems a bit picky, but it shouldn't feel bad in the hand either. Sharp plastic corners make you constantly readjust your hold and take your mind off opening your vino.

* The worm's piercing end is at a insanely flat angle, so you have to insert the point at almost 90 degrees to get it going, and even then it may take a few tries to get it started.

* The supporting lever is too short. You have to sink the worm completely in the cork in order to pull the cork out. And even then it doesn't always do the trick and you may need a good tug at the end to extract the cork.

* The foil cutter is really small and you may not even notice it has one. But it also isn't that convenient to open and you often have to apply pressure to the sharp side to open it. Be careful if you are a bit tipsy not to get cut.

Anyhow, it is a bad corkscrew, trust me. All three main parts are bad: the worm, the lever, the body.
