Review of Laguiole Waiter's Corkscrew (Black) - Trudeau

I've always wanted a Laguiole corkscrew ever since I read about the brand's history.I pick upthis corkscrew at extremely good price and was happy about it.Upon inspection of it, I found the made quality to be good and sturdy, but I could not find the "made in france" wording anywhere on the product.I then went to the garbage can and picked up the box and found it to be made in china. There is nothing wrong with product made in China but I will never expect a french brand that takes pride in producing in this local village to outsource to china.

Product Description
The well known Laguiole corkscrew line has been celebrated as one of the finest line of corkscrews ever created and this black horn waiter's corkscrew set is no exception. This genuine Laguiole corkscrew features a bottle opener, serrated blade for cutting foil, a stainless steel grooved spiral for easy wine opening, and of course the trademark Laguiole corkscrew bee on the back. It comes with a protective leatherette case with a magnetic closure and belt clip for professional waiters and comes packed in a wooden box; perfect for gift giving! 5 year warranty. Common Questions: Is this a real Laguiole corkscrew? Yes it is a officially licensed Laguiole product. The common misconception is that Laguiole itself is a manufacturer, it is not. Laguiole is actually a city in France, not a manufacturer. Laguiole just licenses their name and signature Laguiole bee to manufacturers whom meet their strict quality standards. There are actually dozens of manufacturers for Laguiole branded products, many of whom overcharge for the name. There are two main differences between this corkscrew and many of the more expensive Laguiole corkscrews you see elsewhere. 1) This corkscrew set is assembled in China, and much of it is made by machine to keep the cost down while still meeting the strict quality standards set forth by Laguiole.2) This Laguiole corkscrew carrys a 5 year manufacturer warranty, whereas many of the other handmade Laguiole products do not.

Review of Metrokane Deluxe Rabbit with Foilcutter

The Rabbit is very adept at removing a cork from a bottle. It is not as good at removing the cork from the corkscrew. The handle is just a little too short, lacking enough leverage and requiring a strong force at an awkward angle for the final stroke. Worse, it is very easy to smash a finger at the moment the screw fully unwinds from the cork. This releases all resistance so the handle smashes into the main part. You will definitely learn to grasp near the end of the handle to avoid a mean pinch.

The corkscrew rotates as it plunges into the cork during the first stroke. While the screw is rotating all the force of the handle is pushing down on it. The bearing assembly (part of the screw) is just a couple of washers. Because of friction the screw doesn't want to turn, requiring a lot of force at the handle. The bearing is a weak point of the design in my opinion.

After a few months use the friction got worse and it became more and more difficult to use. It took so much force that eventually the screw bent. I had cut it out with a hacksaw.

I ordered a replacement screw and noticed the bearing was dry of any lubrication. Hmmmm. I added a few drops of motor oil. Now the Rabbit flys! It is SO much easier to use. If the cork is old (we like those old bottles) it is practically effortless to uncork the bottle and to uncork the Rabbit. An amazing difference. New, fresh wines with plastic seals are almost as easy to remove.

My suggestion is to put a few drops of a motor oil or machine oil on the bearings. Remove the cap, take out the screw ("worm" in Rabbit land), and get it totally slippery. If you don't have a quart of motor oil handy, use Vaseline or a mineral oil. Don't use a vegetable oil; it will only work for a while before it oxidizes and turns sticky.

Cheers.

Review of Screwpull Lever Model Replacement Screws

We've had a Rabbit Screwpull for over 10 years. In the past couple of years it's been getting harder and harder to pull corks out of wine bottles with our Rabbit. Simply replacing the screw pull part did the trick (and it only took a couple seconds). Now our Rabbit Screwpull is just like new.

Review of Vinotemp VT-CORKSCREW CorkMate Corkscrew Set

I bought this corkscrew in Oct. 2008 and have tried to repair it over and over. It keeps falling apart in different places. I think it is a cheap imitation of a corkscrew I had for several years and gave to friends while they were visiting. Today was the last time I tried to put it back together and it finally went in the trash can. I will buy another one locally in a store, but never anything from this company.

Review of Oneida Wing Corkscrew

This is an easy to use corkscrew that suffers from one major fault -- the screw is of the closed design. What you want to look for in a good corkscrew (even an inexpensive one) is an open screw design (the Screwpull is the best example of an open screw design). The Oneida model is prone to break or split corks because the screw displaces a large amount of cork as it is forced in.While this model may work well for newer, stiff corks, it will split older, dry corks.Look at other models that use the open screw design and you will be much happier with the results.

Product Description
The ultimate no-nonsense bar implement, this corkscrew is simple to use, quick on the draw, and easy on the hands as well as the eyes. Oneida barware sports a classic look, reflecting the intrinsic aesthetic pleasures that come from fixing a mixed drink with elegant, hand-polished tools of the trade. Accuracy and style are the trademarks of a superior home mixologist, and both are more easily procured with the proper accouterments.

Review of Metrokane Velvet Corkscrew, Black

I love this corkscrew, it works very well. After having used the waiter type for years, this is a fantastic change. Having the foil-cutter built in is a big plus, I don't have to fumble around with a piece on the end like with the waiter or have a seperate piece to keep track of, and it does the job just fine.

It's much simpler and smaller (saves space and is more transportable) than the lever type, which I've also used. And, in my opinion, is more efficient and easier to use. I've also heard complaints that they tend to get more difficult to use over time.

I can't stand the "winged" type either, they are such a pain. The problems that I had with the waiter or winged types were getting them started and making sure that the screw went in staight, having it slip while pulling,or struggling to get a stubborn cork out. I've also had the worm (screw) loosen or break over time with the waiter corkscews. These are not a problems anymore.

It may be more expensive than the more basic types, which may be the way to go if you only open a bottle once a month or less. But it is so worth it if you are opening a bottle a week or more. Every time I use it I'm am amazed by how easily the cork comes out. Looks like this tool will be around in my home for a long time.

Review of Pedrini Black & Satin 6-Inch Basic Corkscrew

I found the Pedrini double lever opener to be a good buy. There are many others which look similar, but look closer. The Pedrini has a true wound-metal screw while many others only give you a die-cast screw. The difference is important as the die-cast style has a thick solid center to the screw, so it must displace more cork while turning thus increasing the effort and the risk of cork splitting. The diecast screw is also not nearly as strong as the wound-metal and can crack and break; it is also heavier. It is a good value, a good manufacturer and a good choice.

Review of Oxo SteeL Winged Corkscrew

I was pretty happy with this wine opener until it snapped off in my bottle of wine. Really, I'm not that strong to be able to do that. It was a defective product.

I took pictures of the thing and threw it away. When I tried to have them replace it, they said you must mail in the broken corkscrew (at your own expense) in order for an exchange. Frankly an additional trip to the post office plus postage isn't worth the hastle of a replacement, which I think OXO is banking on. I offered to send pictures. Customer service was pretty unhelpful. I would not recommend this product to others and will probably avoid buying OXO products in general.

Product Description
The OXO SteeL Winged Corkscrew is perfect for anyone from the wine connoisseur to the casual entertainer. Combining function and elegance, the sleek, brushed stainless steel Corkscrew has a non-stick worm that glides smoothly through all corks and opens all bottles with ease. The soft gripping surfaces on the wings, knob and body provide comfort when removing the cork from the bottle. You'll never lose your foil cutter again since it rests securely inside the knob for storage and can be removed easily when needed. The Winged Corkscrew accommodates all size wine bottles and is dishwasher safe.

Review of Oenophilia Coutale Plus Corkscrew

It took me a while to warm to this waiters corkscrew as I am reasonably adept with a classic waiters corkscrew. The foil cutter works very nicely with a turn of the wrist and the teflon coated corkscrew itself very quickly and easily bores into a cork. This Oenophiliacorkscrew is both sturdily made and very nicely finished and designed.

It differs from a classic corkscrew in that there is a small hook which you need to engage over the bottle lip. You then push down on the handle to open your wine bottle. This process takes a bit of learning and coordination but less so than a classic corkscrew.Overall this is a very nice wine/kitchen gift/gadget which I enjoy using.

Product Description
This Oenophilia Coutale Plus Corkscrew is a radical remake of the traditional waiter's corkscrew. This amazing wine opener features a Teflon-coated spiral for effortless cork extraction, as well as a foilcutter. Just screw the Teflon worm into the bottle, position the boot and gently press the handle down to extract the cork. Makes a great gift or present to yourself.

Review of Metrokane Red V.I.P. Polished "Sterling Model" Rabbit Corkscrew

I found this great Rabbit Corkscrew all in one box(it actually opens on a side hinge ) for my oldest daughter for when she turned 21. We had an "imitation rabbit" given to us 2 years old,and without a great deal of use it fell apart. I had originally purchased the first rabbit from a specialty shop. Realizing my next daughter would soon be 21 I wanted to buy the same. I was dissapointed to find it had only been a special order available over Christmas.
Luckily,I found this one on Amazon. It's even a little better in that the silver plate on the front has a space to engrave a name. I don't really encourage my children to drink by giving them liquor as gifts, but I thought this would be a nice memory for their future dinners. The price ,I think, is a good bargin. Our friends paid more at Sharper Image and it fell apart too. Additionally the box allows you to keep all the extra pieces in one place, not in a kitchen drawer,LOST!

Review of Metrokane VIP Sterling Rabbit Corkscrew with Black Leather Presentation Case

From a design standpoint, this is a very good product. But the documentation is pathetic, and was clearly never tested with new / real users. There is no explanation of how it's supposed to work. That understanding is very helpful:with it, you'll never have trouble, and will marvel at the clever design.Let's get started.

Have a bottle of wine handy on which you've already used the supplied (and very good) little foil cutter to remove the foil over the cork.

Take the unit in your hand and look at the movable parts. The overhead lever that swings outward / downward and then is reversed / brought back over the top - moves the spiral corkscrew up and down.To see this, operate the overhead lever with one hand while holding the clamping "side handles" with the other. When you move the overhead handle the corkscrew rotates.

Why is the corkscrew turning?Because it's forced to do that as it goes through a "guide" (the metal collar with gray plastic center). The gray plastic piece has an internal spiral track that forces the corkscrew to rotate as it passes through.

Here's the critical point:as long as the guide mechanism is locked in place and can't move up or down, the guide forces the corkscrew to rotate when going through.

What if this guide were locked in place on the `down-stroke,' but could move vertically on the `up-stroke'?Then the guide would force the corkscrew to rotate on the way down (so the corkscrew would penetrate the cork), but the guide would stay attached to (and _not_ rotate) the corkscrew on the way up - thus pulling the cork.

When the unit is operated correctly this is exactly what happens. But how?

Look more closely:Before using the Rabbit's `side-handles' to hold the wine bottle neck, the guide is locked in place by two protruding spring-loaded latches and can't move vertically.Try it:it won't budge.(You can actually see these small latches projecting over the top of the guide and keeping it from moving - by looking in the area above and to the far rear of the guide, near the smooth rod.)

On the other hand, when the clamping handles are squeezed onto the neck of a bottle, these latches above the guide _retract_, releasing their hold on the guide so it can move upward.

Do this now:Take your bottle of wine and, with the overhead lever rotated to its fully outward / downward position, place the guide directly over the cork and grip the neck of the bottle _firmly_ with the clamping side handles.

Look at the latches described above:they have retracted, and no longer restrain the guide from moving upward. This has no effect during the down-stroke / cork penetration phase, since the guide is already as low as it can go.Because the guide can't move, it forces the corkscrew to rotate when you operate the overhead lever - thus penetrating the cork.Perform this down-stroke.

Now watch what happens when the overhead lever is pulled back to withdraw the cork (while you at the same time continue to grip the bottle neck firmly with the side levers).Because the guide can now move vertically with the corkscrew, it imposes no rotation on the corkscrew. The corkscrew stays inside the cork as the overhead lever is moved outward / downward, and the cork is extracted.Do it.You now have the cork out of the bottle, suspended above the bottle neck, and are still gripping the side handles around the bottle neck.

Release your hold on the side handles and move the Rabbit away from the bottle. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew.Re-grip the side handles with one hand and once again operate the overhead lever, bringing it all the way back to its fully closed position again (as if you were on the original down-stroke into the cork).

As you get to the very end of the stroke, you will feel resistance and will hear a click:the latches have snapped back into place over the top of the guide, locking it in place. The guide is once again `captured' - and cannot move vertically. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew.

Finally, move the overhead lever back yet again to its fully open position (as if pulling the cork from the bottle). This time the latches _don't_ retract (because you're not using the side handles to grip the bottle neck) - so the latches again keep the guide from moving, and this forces the corkscrew to rotate `in reverse' as it passes upward through the guide. The corkscrew backs out of the cork and the cork drops off.It takes all of a few seconds once you get the hang of it.

Understanding the operating principles should help.None of this is well explained (or, indeed, explained at all) in the almost non-existent documentation.

Review of Pinzon Penguin Wine Opener Gift Set

This wine opener is wonderful! I have used many openers since I began drinking wine and this by far is the easiest one I have ever put my hands on. In 2 seconds the bottle is uncorked - it's that easy! And wow - for the price??? How can you beat that? I highly recommend this product!

I could *not* believe my eyes the first time I saw someone use this Pinzon Wine Opener. It's hard to visualize from the picture, but it is SUPER-EASY, once you figure it out. It also does not require you to hold the bottom of the opener with one hand.
1) Set the bottom of the opener on the top of the wine bottle
2) Lift the handle upper wards - one single lift - and nuzzle the opener around the top of the wine bottle
3) Ease the handle down, which pushes the worm into the cork -- so easy you can't believe it and requires little strength.
5) Push the handle back down into its original position and the cork is out! No muss, no fuss, no cuss!

The opener is absolutely amazing and flawless in its design and function. Yes, even on the first try, I was able to open a bottle in about 3 seconds, including the cork removal from the screw!

Buy it. You will not be disappointed.

I almost purchased a metal waiter's corkscrew but am glad I waited to get this one.The large, rubberize handle is easier to hang on to and is much more comfortable to hold in your hand. The bottle opener and corkscrew are easy to pull open and to close -- they do not "snap" shut the way knife blades can.I like that the foil cutter is not a blade that is pulled open to stick way out from the handle but is a tiny blade protected by hard plastic that juts out just far enough to cut the foil from a bottle neck.I'm not a huge wine connoisseur but I believe this corkscrew does the job while being easy to use.

Product Description
The OXO Good Grips Waiter's Corkscrew is not just for waiters! A stainless steel foil cutter and corkscrew make easy work of opening bottles of wine, and opening pop-top beverage bottles is a snap with the stainless steel bottle opener. A soft body provides a comfortable grip, and the Waiter's Corkscrew folds up compactly. Small enough to fit in your pocket, this Corkscrew is perfect for picnics or travel.

Review of WMF Vino Variable Wine and Processo Corkscrew

This is a fun little guy. If you enjoy manually uncorking. Kind of an art form. But this one is SMOOTH. Due mostly to the teflon coating on the spiral. The cork leaves the bottle before it reaches the top of the arch. The 18/10 smooth stainless really gives it an elegant feel and is quite substantial in weight as well. The dark plastic neck adjusters move outwardly to fit any neck size, but are only a centering mechanism, not a 'holding' device. A very well made thing, but not for the uncorking challenged.

Product Description
With its patented flexible external buttons, this WMF Vino Variable Corkscrew adapts automatically to all bottle necks. The screw is hardened and double Teflon-coated and stands out by its precise tip. With its handsome European design, and 18/10 stainless steel construction with a sleek mirror finish, this corkscrew underscores WMF's high quality standards.

Review of Metrokane Wing Machine Corkscrew

I am struggling trying to find the best wine opener....so far so bad.

I bought this and figured it would do its job well.....wow was I wrong.

First - this thing weighs as much as some full wine bottles....

Second its very confusing in how it works with its latching system....

I tried it on 2-3 bottles and just ended up going back to my $5 solution to open bottles.

If you are looking for something that looks cool then this item is for you...However, if you are a casual wine drinker at home, then this is probably not something you need....any cork screw will work fine.

3/5 in my humble opinion.
